Twitter is designed to go mobile- with its short messages and immediate updates- but how can someone without a data plan on their phone make Twitter mobile?
Text messages help make Twitter mobile. All you have to do is pair your mobile phone with your Twitter account (under “Settings” and then “Devices” from your Twitter web page) and you can update your Twitter profile by simply sending an SMS. This will also help make Twitter mobile because Twitter will forward your direct messages to you as texts.
Once you’ve given Twitter your mobile phone number, it becomes even more mobile when you sign up to get “device updates” from the people you follow. Once you do this every time a specific person you are following posts an update, you will get a text with the contents of their Tweet.
Soon you will realize a limitation when you make mobile Twitter through SMS- Twitter doesn’t forward your @ replies (aka “mentions“) to you. If you are mobile on Twitter through pairing your mobile phone, you won’t know if someone is talking to you (or about you!).
