Twitter Messages: the types of twitter messages and when to use each one
Twitter messages are a great way to keep in touch with your friends- to know what they are doing, thinking, feeling at any given time. Although twitter messages are important I think we sometimes misuse them.
Basically there are two types of twitter messages- public and direct messages. The first type is simply an answer to the question, “what are you doing?” In that kind of twitter message we are broadcasting to the world the contents of our message.
The other type of twitter message is a direct message. This is a “for your eyes only” type of message. Not that twitter messages like these necessarily contain a secret, but that this is a person-to-person communication.
For example, I follow a couple people who are in the same field I work in and also live in my city. I find it useful to send one twitter message on a topic related to our industry and find they are more than willing to use twitter to send messages back giving me advice or answering a question I might have. This is the first type of twitter messages.
As we all get to know each other trough following our twitter messages, the conversation can turn out of the professional and into more personal (not necessarily private) topics. Like the time a couple people were getting together for lunch. Because I followed these people on Twitter I knew they were going to lunch. But because they were conversing using the public type of twitter message I didn’t know if this was something for them alone, or whether this was an open invitation. I didn’t want to invite myself out to lunch with them but I didn’t want to miss a networking opportunity either. Perhaps this would have been a time when they should have used the second type of twitter messages- a direct message to coordinate their lunch plans.
With all the twitter message possibilities available sometimes people think that twitter is the same as text messaging. It is not. You can send text messages to twitter. You can receive text messages with the comments of people you are following on twitter too. But Twitter is not the same as text messaging.
One of the gaps in twitter messages is in the fact that you can get messages from people you follow and send messages to twitter, but if anyone sends you a message through twitter (called an @reply or twitter mentions) you can’t get this kind of twitter message on your cell phone. This is not a type of twitter message that twitter provides.
To get a twitter message someone sent you, you will need to use FeedTwit. This twitter app takes any twitter messages your friends send you and forwards it to you as a direct message. If you have your twitter account set up to get direct messages by SMS or text, you will then get the twitter messages directed to you on your cell phone.
Check it out and see how FeedTwit can help you get all your twitter messages on your cell phone.
