Texting with Twitter

Twitter just wouldn’t be the same without texting. In fact, texting is the most common way I update my twitter status. Twitter and texting go hand-in-hand, if you ask me.

So why doesn’t twitter combine my @ replies and texting. I can receive everyone else’s status by texting but my own. This is a glaring oversight.

It's exciting to get a Twitter text message
I can’t explain the excitement I get when I pick up my cell phone and see that I have a Twitter text message waiting for me. Which friend on Twitter could the text message be from? Could the text message be important information about my industry, first leaked through Twitter? Is the text message another snarky comment from someone’s Twitter account to give me a brief laugh? I don’t know- but the excitement is killing me.

get twitter textsI have always found it strange that Twitter allows you to receive texts from anybody’s replies but your own. So many people use texts with Twitter that it surprises me they did not offer this service.

I read somewhere recently that Twitter does not send texts for replies directed towards you because that would be too many texts- it would get really expensive really fast for Twitter. As a company who has yet to determine a method for making a profit- this is an important consideration.

Google, Twitter and SEO

In my continuing saga of using Twitter in SEO I add this article. After my introductory article on Twitter and SEO, the article on using Twitter for link building, and the third article about using social bookmarks with Twitter for SEO you might have thought I had said everything I could. I did too. Then I realized something else.

A couple SEOs I speak with regularly have noticed that sites they mention on Twitter seem to be indexed more quickly than sites that do not use Twitter. I think there are a couple reasons for this.

I am not getting my Twitter replies

So you want to get your Twitter @ replies on your cell phone? As a rule Twitter does not send you a message when someone replies to you. Good thing we have FeedTwit – a free Twitter app.

Step 1: follow @FeedTwit from your Twitter account.
Step 2: you will receive a direct message from FeedTwit with a password (in about an hour)
Step 3: take that password and log in to feedtwit.com
Step 4: tell feedtwit.com what messages you’d like to receive. By default you can simply press the “get my @ replies” button and you will receive all messages that begin with @your_username.
Step 5: you will begin to receive twitter messages within about 10 minutes. Sometimes this is longer for new Twitter accounts.

Free Twitter Marketing Statistics

FeedTwit has recently made its Twitter statistics available for free.

FeedTwit is a free Twitter app that sends Twitter replies to its users as text messages. As it sends these messages, FeedTwit records statistics about them. These stats, updated on a weekly basis, show the most popular time of day and day of week people are using Twitter.

This is valuable information for anyone who is marketing on Twitter. From it you can time your marketing message to be most effective.

From these stats you can see that there are a couple of peaks throughout each day (all times are Eastern Time, US): Noon, 4pm, 8pm and Midnight.

Google Keywords and March Madness

I am a huge college basketball fan so naturally this is my favorite time of the year. This is probably because I went to the University of Kansas- a school who’s only coach with a losing record is James Naismith. My love of all things Jayhawk Basketball makes it hard to fill out my brackets in any objective way- somehow I always end up with Kansas winning the championship. That means I only predicted the national champion once since I was in Junior High School (the last time the Jayhawks won the National Championship).

Will Twitter make SEO obsolete?

Previously I mentioned how Twitter has helped me do SEO. But, in addition to link building, another advantage of Twitter for SEO is in the connections I’ve made. I have met a lot of people in my city who are involved in SEO through Twitter. With these connections I have learned a lot, helped a little, and even made a couple friends. The other day I went to an SEO meet-up (that I heard about through Twitter) and met a couple Twitter friends. One asked the other why he didn’t show up at a lunch meeting earlier in the day and I was able to answer the question. It’s not that I am stalking SEOs through Twitter- its just that Twitter keeps me connected with other SEOs.

Twitter, Social Bookmarking and SEO

A couple weeks ago I wrote a couple articles about Twitter and SEO. The first article was an overview of Twitter and SEO. The second article discussed link building using Twitter.

Since I wrote those articles I tried an additional SEO experiment with an article that introduced my Twitter statistics. I mentioned the same article on Twitter three times- once as a regular tweet, the second by using Digg’s url shortener, and the third using Sphinn. In each case I used my Twitter statistics and posted the article on Twitter during the ideal time of day. I wanted to know which would give me the most exposure to my page and give me the most SEO benefit.
